Five Types of Storm Damage Caused By Hurricanes

June 1 signaled the start of hurricane season, and with it comes all the potential concerns caused by a hurricane. Not only should you have emergency measures in place, you should make sure you are ready for any storm damage that a hurricane might cause. Here are five types of storm damage you should be worried about from hurricanes:

  1. Wind damage
    • When people think of damage from hurricanes, they often think of issues caused by heavy rain and flooding. However, it is often wind damage that is the bigger culprit, ripping off roof tiles and tearing away anything that is not properly secured. If you are not careful, high winds from hurricanes can devastate your property and endanger your life.
  2. Downed electrical wires
    • It is very common for the power to go out when a hurricane hits, especially if you do not have buried power lines. However, downed power lines and other exposed electrical components can cause issues far beyond simply taking away your electricity. They can pose hazards to nearby structures, and may even start fires if they make contact with something flammable.
  3. Tornadoes
    • If the hurricane itself was not enough of a problem, hurricanes can also cause tornadoes to form. These funnel clouds can cause more localized and dangerous destruction than the hurricane itself, ripping through properties and turning small objects into dangerous projectiles. Be wary if tornadoes are predicted in your area, and make sure you have somewhere safe to flee to if they appear.
  4. Fallen tree branches
    • It is advised that anyone with trees on their property should get their trees trimmed before hurricanes start properly. This is because any damaged or dead branches may be torn off by hurricane force winds. These may fall on top of you or your home, damaging anything (or anyone) that happens to be underneath it.
  5. House fires
    • It is sadly common for people to experience house fires during a hurricane. This can be due to downed electrical wires, as above, or it can be due to accidents involving generators or portable cooking. People should always be cautious when handling anything flammable, or when using cooking tools, during a hurricane, as emergency services may not be able to respond in a timely fashion.
