Five Things You Need to Know About Ice Dams

Ice dams are a perpetual problem for homeowners during the winter, putting homes at risk of damage. Fortunately, with a bit of preparation, you can reduce the chances that ice dams will form on your roof and mitigate the damage they might cause. Here are five things you need to know about ice dams:

  1. Ice dams are most frequent after heavy snowfall
    • Ice dams are caused when snow melt accumulates on a roof and re-freezes, forming a barrier of ice that prevents water from escaping. The conditions for an ice dam forming are most common after heavy snowfall, where the layer of snow closest to the roof will melt but not be able to escape, eventually freezing over and forming a dam. That is why you should watch for any ice dams after a major snowstorm, and address them promptly.
  2. Poor insulation or ventilation increases the risk of ice dams
    • The risk of an ice dam forming increases if your home is not properly insulated or vented. This is because the heat leaking through an improperly insulated roof will melt the snow more quickly, creating the conditions for a dam to form. If your roof is in good condition and well-insulated, however, the chances of a dam forming decrease significantly.
  3. Clogged gutters contribute to the risk of ice dams forming
    • Ideally, any snow melt on your roof should flow out through your gutters. However, if your gutters are clogged with leaves, branches, or other detritus, the melted snow will have a much harder time escaping. This makes it much easier for ice dams to form when you have not cleaned out your gutters.
  4. Ice dams can damage your roof and home
    • Ice dams can pose a serious risk to your home if not addressed quickly. This is because they can cause water to accumulate on your roof, eventually causing damage to your roofing tiles. It can also increase the chances that water will leak into your home, causing water damage and increasing the risks of mold and mildew growing.
  5. Ice dams can pose a risk to you and your family
    • When an ice dam forms, it can cause icicles to form along the edge of your roof. While these are mostly harmless when small, if a dam is not addressed, those icicles can grow large enough to pose harm to people if and when they fall. Dealing with a dam quickly, or preventing one from forming, can reduce the risk of this happening.
