Five Fire Safety Tips to Keep Your Summer Fun

With July 4 coming up, people are preparing major celebrations of the holiday with barbecues, fireworks, and other festivities. However, many of these fun activities carry a major risk of starting a fire, which can cause property damage and harm to you and your loved ones. Make sure to follow these five important five safety tips to keep your summer safe and fun:

  1. Never leave a fire unsupervised
    • Whether you are cooking on a stove, on a grill, or over a fire pit, it is important to make sure your fire is never left unsupervised. A fire, left to its own devices, can easily begin to spread, even when kept away from other obvious flammable materials. Ensuring there is always someone nearby to put the fire out in case something goes wrong is critical to avoiding bodily harm and property damage from an out of control fire.
  2. Keep an eye on children, especially around fires and fireworks
    • Children have some of the best times during the summer months, but they are also at the highest risk of being injured by fire and fireworks. Adults should make sure to keep kids at a safe distance of at least three feet from any open flames, and should stay clear of any commercial fireworks. Otherwise, children could be severely injured, and face a lot worse consequences than simply having their summer vacation ruined.
  3. Clean your grill or fire pit before use
    • A good way to make sure your grill or fire pit remains under control is to make sure they are clean before using them. Grills and fire pits can accumulate a lot of gunk over time, whether as a result of use or just being left out in nature, much of which can contribute to a fire. Cleaning them out minimizes this risk, helping you to cook food more safely.
  4. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby
    • Even if you do everything right, there is always the risk of a fire breaking out or getting out of control. In these cases, having a fire extinguisher handy can help put out the fire quickly and safely, preventing it from getting out of control. That is why you should always make sure to have a fire extinguisher near any open flame, and you should check to ensure your fire extinguisher is not expired so it can be appropriately effective against any fire that breaks out.
  5. Check your smoke detectors
    • Unfortunately, you may not always be around when a fire breaks out in your house. Smoke detectors can help notify you if a fire has started to spread, giving you an opportunity to either put it out, or to evacuate with your loved ones. That is why you should make sure to have your smoke detectors tested, because it may literally save your life.
